Why have EAQ Developed this New Horse Handling Certificate in Association with Silversand Horsemanship?

The EAQ Horse Handling Certificate has been developed in association with Silversand Horsemanship to provide a qualification for horse professionals and those working with horses in equine assisted learning or equine facilitated therapy.

Tricia Day, founder of EAQ said "We realised that we needed to develop a certificate for the horse handling side of equine assisted learning as there was nothing suitable for our facilitators. The horse skills necessary for equine assisted learning are different from the skills for other equine disciplines because so much of the work takes place on the ground."

Equine assisted learning usually relies on ground work rather than ridden skills and it is important that facilitators understand how to manage the horse's behaviour and help the horse cope emotionally as well as physically and mentally.

Filming took place during September 2010 with 3 horse handlers. Tricia said "I am very grateful to Katherine, Clare and Claire who were willing to be filmed while they improved their skills under the guidance of Steve Halfpenny from Silversand Horsemanship. It is easy to watch someone who is very competent and think that it is all very easy, but when you catch hold of the leadrope and try out the activities for yourself, we know how hard it can be!"

Claire Sharland, who was one of the horse handlers taking part in the filming said "I've done lots of traditional riding, hunting and eventing so I thought I could handle horses pretty well but once I started learning how to do these exercises I realised how many of my horse's signals I'd been missing."
